The first of two primary educational modules is a three-day, fully experiential Zoom experience designed to familiarize you with the foundations of trauma—including the basics of how the body works when under stress—as well as the fundamental principles of breathwork and trauma release, built on key supporting ideas from leading somatic researchers.

In this online, home-practice course, BBTRS® founder Giten Tonkov guides you on a personal journey with the Biodynamic Breathwork & Trauma Release System. You can access and experience the 7 guided sessions of 30 to 45 minutes each in two ways: Do the program once, with access for 7 days only (maximum of 5.25 hours); or do it three times in a row (15.75 hours over 21 consecutive days), and retain lifetime access to the online program.
This six-day module is a compilation of live Zoom classes, group sharings, and student “buddy pod” meetings; additional recorded study sessions support the content. This experiential module uses breath and self-bodywork techniques to invite a deep, personal understanding of how and why trauma is stored in the body. Students learn how to run an actual session, both through instruction and through receiving sessions in exchanges with other students. These techniques allow participants to learn both more about themselves and how to guide clients safely through the same process—with targeted attention to hands-on techniques that support clients in a virtual space.

• The psychosomatic theories of Wilhelm Reich, the founding father of body-based psychotherapy
• How trauma and tension are stored in the body’s 7 “Belts of Tension,” which roughly correlate to the chakras
• Session Demonstrations for 7 Belts of Tension (Live and prerecorded)
• Developmental Trauma • Self-bodywork techniques for trauma release • Conscious movement and unwinding
• Skills involved in facilitating in-person, small-group breath sessions/workshops
• Skills involved in facilitating online group breath sessions/workshops
• 1:1 Session exchanges with other students
• Regular group sharings
• Q&A sessions with the faculty and student “buddy pods”
• Individual BBTRS sessions with mentors
In-person trainings provide the most enriching experiences BBTRS® has to offer. Participants work many hours per day, share opening meditations, learn group exercises and hands-on techniques, personally experience BBTRS® sessions, benefit from in-the-moment group sharing, and enjoy immediate proximity to faculty and other students.
In these trainings, students unpack the entire scope of the modality, working with felt sense, resourcing and pendulation, self-bodywork, unwinding spinal movements, grounding—and, importantly, releasing various layers of physical tension, from periphery to the core. The work comes together in an organic way that is enriched by the group energy and is conducive to personal growth.
There is no substitute for this collective space, or the quality of learning that the group develops together over the course of one week—it’s an immersive experience that can change your life.
The first In-Person training is focused on your own experience of giving and receiving BBTRS® sessions; it also includes special evening sessions tailored to future professionals.
Since students from various stages of training participate in all in-person BBTRS® workshops, all workshops follow the same general structure and approach—as described in In-Person Module 1.
However, when Advanced Professional Practitioner students attend their second In-Person Training, they receive more in-depth exposure to BBTRS® and the chance to work more closely with faculty.
Deeper understanding of the modality comes from: repetition of the entire “7 belts of tension” sequence; more hands-on practice with specific techniques; exposure to a wider variety of hands-on techniques; holding space for individuals and groups; opportunities for nuanced and detailed explanations/Q&A; and the chance to receive a few BBTRS sessions.
Students also learn to create a structure for facilitating group workshops, and attend additional mentoring sessions specific to certification.
Since students from various stages of training participate in all in-person BBTRS® workshops, all workshops follow the same general structure and approach—as described in In-Person Module 1.
However, when Advanced Professional Practitioner students in Track 4 attend their third In-Person Training, their personal focus shifts significantly toward understanding and practicing the process of facilitating the group experience.
Of course, their exposure to BBTRS® faculty and techniques continues to increase.
Students will have an opportunity to trail faculty during session exchange practice and receive coaching in real time. Their general knowledge base expands so that they will feel confident to offer BBTRS sessions in their own practices.
Students are required to complete a 21-day meditation challenge using meditation(s) of their own choice. Benefits of this practice include developing inner space, an inner witness—which is extremely important in embracing the process of supporting other people. Meditation allows us to track felt sensations, look at the self objectively, and be present to our own experiences in non-judgmental awareness. The ability to grow the ability to be present for others is an extremely important skill for all professionals in the helping and healing arts.
Live instruction is supported by pre-recorded webinars that are accessed by students on their own time. These materials provide “deeper dives” into topics informing the foundations of BBTRS, and provide background and context for the live sessions. Therefore, we recommend that students become familiar with these webinars before they attend Module 2. Please note: These webinars reference the work of standard-setters in many fields, and some topics might at first appear to be science-heavy—but don’t feel concerned. Our instructors have made the content accessible to students from all walks of life and specialties. Plus, you’ll learn a lot about your own body!

These sessions support the student’s growth as a preactitioner; throughout these sessions, a mentor is available to consult if needed.
